TradingView vs MetaTrader 5: Which to Use?

Short answer: Choose TradingView if you want the best charts, many markets in one place and an easy scripting language, and you mostly trade by hand. Choose MetaTrader 5 if you trade forex or CFDs with a broker that offers it and want fully automated trading that runs inside the platform. Many traders use both: TradingView to analyse, MT5 to execute.
Side-by-side comparison
| TradingView | MetaTrader 5 | |
|---|---|---|
| What it is | Charting and analysis platform with optional broker connections | Trading terminal supplied by brokers, built by MetaQuotes |
| Cost | Free Basic plan; paid plans from $12.95/month billed annually | Free; you get it through a broker |
| Where it runs | Browser, desktop app, mobile | Windows desktop, web terminal, mobile; other desktops via workarounds |
| Markets | Stocks, crypto, forex, futures, indices and more in one account | Whatever your broker offers, most often forex and CFDs |
| Charts | Modern, fast, huge drawing toolset | Functional but dated; fewer chart types |
| Scripting | Pine Script: easy to learn, runs on TradingView's servers | MQL5: closer to C++, more powerful, steeper learning curve |
| Automation | Alerts and webhooks to a third-party bot or broker bridge | Expert Advisors trade directly in the terminal |
| Backtesting | Strategy Tester on chart; quick to iterate | Strategy Tester with multi-symbol tests and parameter optimisation |
| Community | Huge public script library and trade ideas | MQL5 marketplace and forum |
| Trading from charts | Through supported brokers only | Native, it is your broker's terminal |
Where TradingView wins
- Charts and usability. Smoother charts, more drawing tools and a cleaner interface. You can sign in from any browser and your layouts follow you.
- One place for every market. Watch a stock, a crypto pair and EUR/USD side by side without opening three platforms.
- Pine Script. Much easier than MQL5. Most traders can write a working indicator or alert in an afternoon, and thousands of open-source scripts are a click away.
- Alerts. Server-side alerts work with your computer switched off, and can trigger push, email or webhook notifications.

Where MetaTrader 5 wins
- Native automation. Expert Advisors open and close trades themselves. On TradingView you need webhooks and an external service to do the same.
- Optimisation. MT5's Strategy Tester can run large parameter searches across several symbols, which TradingView does not offer in the same depth.
- Price. It is free with your broker, with no tiers or limits on charts and indicators.
- Execution detail. Depth of market, order types and position modes depend on your broker, but are built into the terminal.
Which one should you use?
| If you… | Use |
|---|---|
| Trade stocks or crypto, or several markets | TradingView |
| Trade forex or CFDs by hand and value good charts | TradingView, connected to a supported broker if possible |
| Want a fully automated forex robot running 24/7 | MetaTrader 5, usually on a VPS |
| Want to learn to code your own indicators | TradingView (Pine Script) |
| Use a broker that only offers MT5 | MT5 for orders, TradingView for analysis |
Using both together
A common setup is to do all analysis and alerts in TradingView, then place orders in MT5. If you want the TradingView side to automate, a webhook alert can send signals to a bridge service that places the trade in MT5. Webhooks need a paid TradingView plan and two-factor authentication.

FAQ
Is MT5 better than TradingView for beginners? For learning to read charts, TradingView is friendlier. MT5 makes more sense once you have chosen a forex broker and want to trade inside its terminal.
Can I trade directly from TradingView? Yes, through brokers that integrate with TradingView. The list varies by country, so check your broker before you commit.
Can I move my MT5 indicators to TradingView? Not directly. MQL5 and Pine Script are different languages, so indicators need to be rewritten.
